ANDREW VAZQUEZ AWARDED 2023 FALCONER FOUNDATION SIEBEL BREWING SCHOLARSHIP

From an outstanding group of talented applicants, Andrew Vazquez of ShaKa Brewing (Sunnyvale, CA) has been named recipient of the 2023 Glen Hay Falconer Foundation Siebel Brewing Scholarship. Our scholarship program encompasses over half of the United States geography and this year’s scholarship drew candidates from throughout that region. The scholarship is to the WBA Concise Course in Brewing Technology that takes place this November in Chicago. The Concise Course in Brewing Technology is a two-week intensive program that covers every topic critical to successful brewery operations.

Andrew began as a home brewer and ultimately translated that passion into career aspirations as a professional brewer. He is currently Assistant Brewer at ShaKa Brewing where he is intimately involved in all aspects of brewing and the business operation from the taproom to wholesale accounts. The Selection Committee noted Andrew’s strong science background as being well suited for the technical aspects of brewing. In the words of a Selection Committee member, “Not only does Andrew have a solid science skill set but he also demonstrates unwavering dedication and commitment to the art of the craft” “He is one of those candidates where he is at the perfect juncture in his career to maximize the benefits of the Concise Course in Brewing Technology. From his application and recommendations, Andrew is clearly someone who lives to share knowledge and build friendships though common interests.”

Andrew has a strong connection to his local community which the Selection Committee highlighted: “Andrew impressed me that he is so passionate about the Sunnyvale community, its heritage and mixed cultural expressions that he wants to bolster through brewing beer that makes the greater community proud. Glen made Eugene proud as well. Andrew is prime to utilize the Siebel Scholarship to realize the goals he has for his career and his community.” “We all wish Andrew the best for the upcoming course and know that he’ll return with deeper knowledge and technical skills and expertise that will benefit ShaKa Brewing and the local community and that Andrew will be a great mentor for future generations.”

The Foundation thanks the incredible Selection Committee for its dedication and energy. The 2023 Selection Committee consisted of Jamie Floyd (Ninkasi Brewing), John Hannafan (Siebel Institute), John Maier (Rogue Ales), Lisa Morrison (Belmont Station Bottle Shop & Biercafé), and Shaun O’Sullivan (21st Amendment Brewery) who were given the difficult decision of selecting a single recipient from a deep and talented group of deserving candidates.

To date, the Foundation has granted a total of 53 brewing education scholarships.
